Professor Ahn, Sung-Hoon from our department has been selected for the 65th ‘3·1 Cultural Award’ in Technology and Engineering. Professor Ahn is a world-renowned researcher and pioneer in the field of smart technology, achieving outstanding results by creatively improving integrated systems of 'materials, design and manufacturing' in various fields such as additive manufacturing, smart factory, appropriate technology for smart grids, sensors and actuators, robotics and composite materials. His research outcomes have been published in over 300 SCIE-level papers, including [Advanced Materials], [Advanced Functional Materials], [ACS Nano], [Small], and [Nature Materials]. He has an H-index of 67 on Google Scholar, a citation index of 22,000, and an H-index (D-index) of 60 in his field according to Research Gate in 2023. Additionally, he has filed and registered over 170 domestic and international patents, significantly contributing to the fields of design and production.
In particular, his research titled 'Anisotropic Material Properties of Fused Deposition Modeling ABS' presented new standards in the field of 3D printing by making innovative discoveries about the anisotropic properties of materials. This research has been cited over 1,253 times and has received high attention in the fields of engineering design and manufacturing. Furthermore, Professor Ahn has been active not only in research and development but also in contributing to the international community by integrating appropriate technology and smart technology to propose economically efficient solutions, applying these to developing countries such as Nepal and Tanzania, and implementing science and technology ODA and support.
Since 2011, Professor Ahn has constructed more than ten small solar, hydro, and wind power plants in Nepal and Tanzania, providing water and electricity to the residents of developing countries through the advancement of smart technology. This has highlighted the excellence of Korean science and technology internationally while also making social contributions. Currently, he serves as the Chief Advisor for the Tanzania-Korea Global Problem-Solving Center of the National Research Foundation of Korea, the Korea-Germany Intelligent Manufacturing Systems Laboratory, and the Center for Excellence in Smart Manufacturing at Amada Science and Technology University in Ethiopia. He is also an academician of CIRP (International Academy for Production Engineering), contributing to both his research capabilities and international collaboration.
In recognition of his research achievements and social contributions to the international community, the entire panel of judges selected Professor Sung-Hoon Ahn as the recipient of the 3·1 Cultural Award in Technology and Engineering.
