[Seoul Economic Daily] KISTI Develops Large-scale Supercomputing Simulation Software with SNU<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Simulation SW Makes High-efficiency, Low-noise System A/C Possible

On March 2, Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) announced the development of a large-scale supercomputing simulation software for replicating wind movement near A/C outdoor units, in collaboration with Prof. Haecheon Choi’s research team from Seoul National University’s Dept. of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

Previously, they have used the software to calculate the wind movement around the fan and applied it to LG Electronics’ System A/C.

But the newly developed supercomputing simulation software is 8 times more accurate than its predecessor, utilizing more than 6,000 CPUs of KISTI supercomputer simultaneously. Calculating the air flow around the fan, the software detected the vortex responsible for lowering the efficiency and amplifying the noise of the A/C. Also, in order to avoid vortex formation and increase wind flow, they added a bump in the flow field, increasing air flow volume and reducing noise.

KISTI offers technological and financial support for supercomputer users who require large-scale calculations. Seoul National University, co-developing the software with KISTI, was able to simulate the air flow around the fan, utilizing KISTI’s supercomputer #4.

Soonwook Hwang, Director of Supercomputing Center at KISTI, added that “KISTI is in the process of building a fifth supercomputer, which is expected to be 70 times more enhanced in terms of performance” and that “supercomputing simulation software is a noteworthy turning point of product development process and cost reduction of companies.”
