2023 1st Semester Qualification Exam Information for Master's/Doctoral Thesis Submission
The qualification exam (major test) for dissertation submission for master's, doctoral/master's and doctoral programs in the first semester of 2023 is conducted as follows. Applicable candidates should submit their applications within the period.
* Changes related to the implementation of the thesis submission qualification test
- The following changes apply starting from March 1, 2020 for students enrolled in doctoral courses and combined master's and doctoral programs.
- Since the doctoral course is conducted in the third semester, it will be applied from the thesis submission qualification test in March 2021.
- Since the combined master's and doctoral course is conducted in the 4th semester, it will be applied from the thesis submission qualification test in September 2021.
- Students who enter the doctoral course and combined master's and doctoral course before 2019 (including will take the existing oral test method.
1. Eligibility to take the comprehensive exam (major exam)
1) Students who must take the test this time (excluding students who passed the test)
①Master's course: Master's course students enrolled before September 2021 (included)
② Combined master's and doctoral degree course: Students enrolled before September 2021 (included)
③Doctoral course: Doctoral students enrolled before March 2022 (included)
2) Faculty regulations
① Master's course: Those who have registered for more than two semesters and have completed environmental safety education (new education) and respect for life (suicide prevention) education provided by the College of Engineering
② Doctoral course and combined master's and doctoral course: Doctoral course must be conducted at leastce within 3 semesters for those who have registered for more than 2 semesters and have completed environmental safety education (new education) and life respect (suicide prevention) education provided by the College of Engineering. Master’s and Doctorate Integrated Program must be conducted at leastce within 4 semesters
2. Submission of documents (submission to the department office)
1) Submission period: Until February 9 (Thu), 2023 [Direct submission to Department of Mechanical Engineering Administration Office Building 301 Room 116 or email to the person in charge (srchu@snu.ac.kr) to submit scanned copies of documents with signature/seal]
* After the application period, those who are eligible for doctoral dissertation (required answer test) will be emailed a PDF file (including password) of the question bank.

① Master's course (no change): Application for master's major examination (Form 1 in Attachment 1)
② Doctorate course
- Application form for doctoral major examination (written form) (Form 3 in Attachment 1): When applying, fill oute major group you wish to take (even if you are not a member of the advisor's group) and submit it.
- In the case of doctoral students who have not received a master's degree in the field of machinery, and those who have obtained a master's degree from another university, the prerequisites for the master's thesis must also be satisfied, soe copy of the application for the master's major test (Form 1 in Attachment 1) submission
- Non-disclosure agreement (Attachment 5)
③ Combined master's and doctoral course
- Application form for master's major exam
- Doctoral major test (written) application form (Form 3 in Attachment 1)

* Common submission documents (all students): Those who have not completed education respect for life and environment safety education must submit the attached 'Confirmation of Failure to Completion' along with the application form. After checking the training schedule, be sure to complete it before the discussion.
cf) <Requirements for major exam for master’s thesis>
• Students must have completed 3 major courses including 2 major group courses (including at least 1 core course), and the average score of these 3 subjects must be 60 or higher as a requirement.
• Score calculation method by completion grade: A+ (100 points), A0 (90 points), A- (80 points), B+ (70 points), B0 (60 points), B- (50 points), C+ (40 points), C0 (30 points), C- or lower (0 points)
• However, if it is necessary to include courses from other departments, approval from the advisor and the chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering must be obtained. A statement of reason must be submitted. (Undergraduate homepage -> Academic Administration(학사행정) -> Form(양식) -> Search for statement of explanation(사유서). Students submitly after receiving approval from their advisor). Even if subjects from other departments are included in meeting the prerequisites, they cannot be included ase of the three undergraduate and graduate subjects in the Department of Mechanical Engineering curriculum, which is a question for the master's thesis.
3. Online application (apply at mySNU)
1) Online application period: late February ~ early March (detailed schedule will be announced later)
2) Both master's and doctoral programs/integrated master's and doctoral programs must be submittedline
3) When registeringline, be sure to upload the certificate of safety and environment education (all school members). Students entering the class of 2016 or later must upload the certificate of completion of the Respect for Life (Suicide Prevention) education
4) How to applyline
① Student directline application at MYSNU-Academic Administration-[Graduation]-[Graduation Exam Application]-[Comprehensive Exam Application]
i. Do not include the application number, co-advisor, and assistant referee
ii. Certificate of completion of environmental safety education (certificate of completion during new training in February or August) must be uploaded as an attachment
iii. Respect for life (suicide prevention) training must be uploaded as an attachment (students from 2016wards)
② Click "Save" in the application details => Do you want to apply? => Click "Yes"
③ Click "Add" in the application subject information at the bottom => If you select "Major" in the subject category for the application test, "Special Major Test" is automatically selected the right => Save
4. Guidelines for each course of the comprehensive exam (major exam)
1) Master's course
① Select 3 courses completed among the curriculum of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (undergraduate and graduate school) and submit a summary ofe page per course detailing the relationship between each course and research contents and specific details research activities: Related contents will be provided later for applicantsly Email to be sent
② Submission period for summary: About 1 week after the examination (later announced)
③ The existing basic test is abolished
2) Doctorate and combined master's and doctoral degree programs
* Starting from 2020 (written test)
① Composition
- Exam time: 1 hour
- 5-7 questions for each major group, select 3 questions and write an answer
- A question bank (around 30 questions) for each major group is provided to the test taker after the application period.
- Since it has been decided that the question bank file is providedly to test takers (after application for the discussion session), the test takers are requested to submit a non-disclosure agreement (attachment 5) when applying, and make sure that the provided questions are not leaked to others ( If it is leaked to others, there may be disadvantages to the results of the test).
② Scoring: A total score of 70 points or more (out of 100 points) will pass
③ Exam schedule: Scheduled for mid-March (details to be announced later)
5. Korean language test (only for foreigners whose native language is English): schedule to be announced later
6. Announcement of Successful Applicants: Scheduled to announce results after assessment by the Academic Committee of the Graduate School of Engineering in April 2023
※ Note
1) The College of Engineering imposes a completion of environmental safety education (new education) as a qualification for the thesis submission qualification test, and in order to take the first semester of 2023, it must complete safety and environmental education by February 2023.
2) The College of Engineering added those who have completed the education respect for life (prevention of suicide) provided by the College of Engineering from freshmen in 2016 as candidates for the thesis submission qualification test.
3) Respect for life education can be recognized as a total ofe completion between courses (bachelor's, master's, doctoral), but in the case of environment safety education, it must be completed again if there is a period of separation between courses.
4) If you fail the dissertation submission qualification test (oral test and written test) of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, you can retake the testlyce, and you must retake the test in the next semester after failing. If you fail a total of 2 times, you cannot continue the doctoral program. However, students in the combined master's and doctoral degree program can acquire a master's degree if they meet the requirements for conferring a master's degree in accordance with Article 8 of the Master's and Doctoral Degree Acquisition Regulations of the School of Mechanical Engineering.
