Title: High-Aspect-Ratio Nanopatterned Aluminum Current Collectors for Conformal and Mechanically Interlocked Binder Networks in Lithium-ion Battery Electrodes

International Conference: 2025 MRS Fall Meeting

Date & Venue: November 30 – December 5, 2025, Hynes Convention Center, Boston, USA

Conference Overview:

The MRS Fall Meeting, organized by the Materials Research Society (MRS), is one of the world’s largest and most prestigious international conferences in materials science and engineering. This award is regarded as international recognition of the study’s originality and academic excellence, particularly in the areas of metal materials processing and applications to lithium-ion battery manufacturing processes.

Summary:

The research team developed a technology to effectively control binder migration, a critical issue that occurs during lithium-ion battery electrode manufacturing. Using ion beam irradiation, they precisely fabricated high aspect ratio micro/nanopatterns, ranging from several hundred nanometers to a few micrometers, on the surfaces of metal current collectors (aluminum and copper). They confirmed that this patterned structure suppresses the one-sided accumulation of binder during slurry drying. By demonstrating the effectiveness of micro patterning in controlling binder distribution nonuniformity and by proposing a quantitative fluid mechanics mechanism for the phenomenon for the first time, the study is expected to contribute to the development of next generation high performance lithium-ion batteries.
