Topic: AI-based Washing Machine Condition Monitoring Using a Voice Recognition Microphone

Summary:

A research team from Prof. Youn, Byeng Dong’s Hyperautomation Artificial Intelligence Lab in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Seoul National University won the Silver Prize (Young Engineer Group) at the 4th KSME–LG Future Home Tech Challenge on December 10. The award was achieved by a team consisting of Ph.D. students Kim Yong chae and Kim Taehyung, and M.S. students Kim Juhyun and Lim Uri, who presented an idea titled “AI-based Washing Machine Condition Monitoring Using a Voice Recognition Microphone.” The work collects acoustic signals generated during washing machine operation using a voice recognition microphone and uses an AI model to analyze and monitor the machine’s operating state and potential anomalies in real time. Unlike conventional diagnostic approaches based on vibration or current sensors, this method can detect condition changes using only operating sounds without installing additional expensive sensors, offering both cost efficiency and ease of installation. The team improved state-recognition accuracy by training acoustic patterns under various operating conditions, including normal operation, load changes, and anomalous signs, demonstrating the potential of an AI-based smart home-tech solution for early fault detection and more efficient maintenance of home appliances. Meanwhile, the KSME–LG Future Home Tech Challenge is a major program of the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers (KSME) that aims to strengthen collaboration between academia and industry for the advancement of Korea’s mechanical industry; in partnership with LG Electronics, the competition is designed to discover innovative ideas in future home-tech technologies and explore their potential for industrial application.
