5. 내 용 : Foremost among the challenges the global community must face in the new century will be how to resolve effectively the well-publicized tri-lemma of balancing population growth, pollution, and natural resources availability. With the world population projected to reach 10 billion by 2050, sustaining economic development while preserving our environment will remain a central global issue, as people’s aspirations are bound to soar while the earth’s available resources dwindle. Reconciling people’s desire for economic prosperity, welfare, and environmental preservation within our planet’s finite resources presents a formidable challenge known as “global sustainability” issue.
Science and technology hold the key to effectuating sustainable growth. The new century will necessarily usher in the golden age of technology, with the world destiny to be immensely influenced and shaped by technological innovations.
In this presentation, various prime moving forces for the new century are examined and concurrent technological megatrends reviewed, as technology promises to play the key role in resolving the tri-lemma that is inherent in global sustainability challenge. The role of energy in general and electricity in particular is brought to the fore, as global electrification is the best hope for achieving globally sustainable growth.
