Characteristics of guided waves were briefly discussed and the concept of guided wave mode identification using short time Fourier transforms was introduced. The relationship between short time Fourier transform diagrams and guided wave group velocity dispersion diagrams was revealed. The group velocity corresponded to the time of flight in short time Fourier transform diagrams. Experimental group velocity dispersion patterns were obtained from short time Fourier transforms, and well agreed with theoretical results. And the effectiveness of short time Fourier transforms in the identifications of not only guided wave modes but also frequency bandwidth.
