Professor Ko, Seung Hwan has been selected for the 2025 Leader Research Program, organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT). This selection follows the announcement made by the ministry on May 28, as part of the 2025 Basic Research Program results, which included the selection of both Leader Research and Leading Research Center projects.

The Leader Research Program is the largest basic research initiative designed to support Korea’s most creative and ambitious researchers. Selected researchers receive up to 800 million KRW per year, for a period of up to 9 years.

This year, a total of 94 researchers applied, and only six, including Professor Ko, were ultimately selected.

Professor Ko proposed a research project titled “Soft, Customized, and High-Density Neural Interfaces at the Cellular Level”. The goal of his project is to overcome the limitations of traditional, rigid, metal-based neural interfaces, which can damage brain tissue and trigger immune responses. By using soft materials that mimic living tissue, the research seeks to develop biocompatible brain interfaces that integrate seamlessly with neural cells.

Professor Ko’s research will officially begin with government funding starting June 1, 2025.
