Endowed Chair Professor Choi, Haecheon of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Seoul National University has been awarded the Order of Science and Technology Merit – Innovation Medal in recognition of his contributions to the advancement of science and technology, on the occasion of the 2025 Science and ICT Day.

The Ministry of Science and ICT(MCIT) presents orders, medals, presidential citations, and prime ministerial commendations annually to individuals who have significantly contributed to the development of technology. This year, a total of 157 recipients were honored in the fields of science and technology promotion and national R&D.

Professor Choi was recognized for developing the world’s most advanced turbulent flow prediction technology, pioneering the creation of a novel, high-efficiency, low-noise fan through biomimicry, and contributing to the establishment of scientific research systems.

Having earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from Seoul National University and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Stanford University, Professor Choi proposed algorithms for precise prediction of turbulent flows and has driven the advancement of global research in this field. He also developed turbulence prediction software. He distributed the software free of charge to domestic universities and research institutes, while signing licensing agreements with local companies—leading the progress of fluid dynamics in Korea. Furthermore, he conducted the world’s first research combining biomimicry and fluid dynamics, contributing significantly to the commercialization of low-noise, high-efficiency axial fans in collaboration with Korean industries.

Professor Choi expressed his gratitude, saying, “It is a great honor to receive such a meaningful award in the field of science and technology, and I sincerely thank all those who have supported my research.” He added, “I will continue to embrace challenges and innovations for the advancement of science and technology.”
