Professor Byeng Dong Youn’s Laboratory for System Health & Risk Management achieved a splendid feat of winning both first and second prizes in the Industrial Data Analysis International Competition hosted by the US PHM Association. This research team was invited to the Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) Society 2022 conference held in Nashville, USA November 1-4 and presented their research results, and the technologies proposed by each team will be published in related international journals.
The PHM Data Challenge is an annual international competition held by the PHM Society, a world-renowned academic society in the field of health prediction and management of industrial facilities. A total of 130 research teams from famous companies/schools/research institutes around the world, such as NASA and Google, participate in the competition to analyze actual industrial data generated in industrial sites every year and compete for the ability to predict the type of failure of the facility and the time of failure.
This year, the task of using hydraulic signals to determine the presence or absence of defects in hydraulic rock drills under various operating conditions and to predict the size of defects was presented. The task required technology to predict defects in mining-related systems, which have high economic and social costs and are in the background of very harsh operating conditions. The technologies each proposed by the research team are significant in that they have achieved great results by applying industrial artificial intelligence technology that combines mechanical engineering domain knowledge, which is the strength of the research team, to problems that could not be solved with artificial intelligence technology alone. Professor Youn's team participated in industrial data analysis contests held by related societies such as IEEE as well as this competition, and was selected as a winner a total of 22 times over the past three years.
Regarding this award, Professor Youn said, “Industrial data is rapidly increasing with the emergence of the 4th industrial revolution, and the economic effects of industrial facility availability, manufacturing quality, industrial safety, and productivity improvement made possible through industrial data analysis and prediction are significant. It is more than 50 trillion annually,” he added. “Through this industry-university-research cooperation, Korea’s PHM technological capabilities havece again proven that it is the world’s best, and it has shown the possibility that Korea can become a global leader in the 4th industrial revolution.”
