MACCA Interview

1. Please introduce the club and tell us about its main activities.

MACCA is a computer management club for the Department of Mechanical Engineering, responsible for managing the Haedong Computer Lab located between the Haedong Study Hall and Haedong Studio. If you take a look inside the computer room, you may find out a printing service available at a much cheaper price than the external printers – 30 won for black and white, and 300 won for color per page.

MACCA is also responsible for installing and managing programs and versions computers in the Haedong Studio. Especially this semester, with the introduction of the new course "Fundamentals of Mechanical System Design and Robot Programming," we had to install a new operating system called 'Ubuntu,' which wase of our club's tasks. Additionally, our members regularly take turns to inspect and maintain the computers in Haedong Studio to ensure they are working well.

The number of members is adjusted according to the intensity of the work each semester, usually maintaining a group of fewer than 10 members. Therefore, the number of members is determined based the expected workload for the semester, and new members are recruited when vacancies arise. Mostly, there are more male members, so vacancies often occur due to military service obligations.

 

1. Please tell us about the advantages and good qualities of the club.

First of all, we have a pleasant working environment in the Haedong Computer Lab. It's cool in the heat and warm in the cold (laughs). There are personal lockers available as well, so you can use them in addition to the lockers assigned by the department. The pay received in the form of work-study scholarships is also quite good. In addition, there are materials within MACCA that are exclusive to our members, which can be helpful for learning. But above all, the strong mentorship between seniors and juniors is a significant advantage, as it provides substantial support from alumni who have entered the academic field. This semester, during our team project, we received a lot of advice from members and seniors, then we had the experience of listening to a lot of advice.

Speaking of friendship, I think it's a very family-like atmosphere. During club activities, we operate under a 1-to-1 mentorship system, so when new members come in, they work together with the existing members. Additionally, we are currently planning workshops and a homecoming day that were put hold due to the pandemic. We plan to revive the workshops using the activity funds accumulated during this time. Also, this semester, Professor Kim Ah-young, who is in charge of MACCA, even treated us to a meal as a form of support for the efforts we put into installing 'Ubuntu.'

 

1. Say whatever you want to future new members.

MACCA is a great club that anyone would want to join, but opportunities for admission are very limited. As I mentioned earlier, we recruit additional membersly when vacancies arise, so if you wish to join our club, please continue showing interest. It is likely that vacancies will arise this semester as well, and we will promote our recruitment through platforms like Everytime, so please check back from time to time and show a lot of interest.

Lastly, I would like to address all students. Occasionally, there are individuals who open the printers and take A4 paper, which constitutes infraction. Please refrain from such actions. Also, I would appreciate it if you use the printing service I mentioned earlier. If the printers aren't used much by mechanical engineering students, they might be removed, and this could potentially be the last summer vacation they are available. So please give us a lot of interest and support!
