Prof. Haecheon Choi Receives the 29th Sudang Award from Samyang Group

On August 12, The Sudang Group (Chairperson: Sang-ha Kim, CEO of Samyang Group) announced the three recipients for the 29th Sudang Awards.

The Sudang Awards were established in the name of the founder of Samyang Group Yeon-su Kim. Originally beginning as the Sudang Science Awards in 1973, the awards have been expanded to three branches of basic science research, applied science research, and humanities and social sciences since 2006.

The recipients of this year are as follows: Prof. Dong-ho Kim, Dept. of Chemistry, Yonsei University (basic science research); Prof. Haecheon Choi, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, Seoul National University (applied science research); and Chair Prof. Han-gu Lee, Global Academy for Future Civilizations, Kyung Hee University (humanities and social sciences).

The award ceremony will be held September 9. Each recipient is awarded with a plaque and a prize of 100 million won. In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, a minimal number of attendees, including the recipients, will be present during the ceremony.

Prof. Dong-ho Kim’s research the aromaticity and antiaromaticity of molecules is a breakthrough in the field. After 40 years, Prof. Kim proved the hypothesis that aromaticity of a molecule can be reversed according to the molecular state with his experiment using the spectroscope, successfully controlling the material property of the molecule. In addition, the laser spectroscope used in the research was made with Korean technology.

Prof. Haecheon Choi’s work turbulence prediction and control is leading the field. Combining basic research and biomimetic technology, he has also produced commercial products such as the AC unit fan, golf balls, concept cars, and excavator parts. In addition, he has contributed to the Korean science and technology research administration by creating a ‘representative thesis qualitative evaluation policy,’ which will change the culture of research evaluation in the country.

Prof. Han-gu Lee has produced stellar work historical and social philosophy based his research critical rationalism. His major publications including ‘Philosophy of Historiography,’ ‘Historicism and Anti-historicism,’ and ‘History Meets Philosophy’ have been lauded as excellent literature. He was also appointed as the first Editor-in-Chief of Diogenes, a humanities journal published by the International Council for Philosophy and Humanistic Studies (ICPHS), an NGO within UNESCO, and published a special issue Korean philosophy.
