PhD student JongKeun Lim, from the System Health and Risk Management Lab (Advisor: Prof. Byeng Dong Youn) of Seoul National University Dept. of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, received Best Presentation Award at 2019 PHM Korea Conference for his paper titled “Developing Self-Diagnosis System for Car Wheel Bearings.”

In the above paper, Mr. Lim suggested a technology that can be utilized in the car industry, which has been reshaped by intelligent self-driving cars and car sharing trends. By monitoring the vibration of the wheel bearing, it is possible to perform a diagnosis and predict when the part should be replaced. This is the first attempt at applying machine diagnostics on car wheel bearings. The technology can increase the safety and comfort of the driver. Also, the presentation included an actual collaborative project between an automotive company, which demonstrated the possibility of commercialization. It was recognized as an excellent example of academia-industry cooperation between Iljin Global and OnePredict (CEO: Prof. Youn).
