Seoul National University’s College of Engineering (Dean: Kookheon Char) announced that ‘Shinyang Engineering Academic Award Ceremony’ will be held in SNU Engineering House Auditorium at 12pm, November 17th.

For this year’s Shinyang Engineering Academic Award, three faculty members were selected each from education and academia sectors, who are as follows: Prof. Hangman Zo of Dept. of Architecture, Prof. Kyungsik Lee of Dept. of Industrial Engineering, and Prof. Yoonchan Jeong of Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering for the education sector; Prof. Junho Song of Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Prof. Seung Hwan Ko of Dept. of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and Prof. Kisuk Kang of Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering for the academia sector.

Shinyang Engineering Academic Award was established by the late Seok-gyu Jeong, chairperson of the Shinyang Cultural Foundation who was also an SNU Engineering alumni and the founder of TSR, for the purpose of supporting young professors. Named after Jeong, the award goes to Engineering professors under 49 with outstanding performance; this year marks the 14th ceremony from its establishment in 2005. A total of 81 professors have received the award, which has greatly contributed to research activities and motivation among faculty members.

Seok-gyu Jeong graduated from SNU Dept. of Chemical Engineering in 1952 and managed his company, TSR, for about 50 years. In 2001, he established the Shinyang Cultural Foundation after selling the company. He constructed and donated the Shinyang Halls I, II, and III, equipped with computer rooms and reading rooms. In 2005, he moved Shinyang Cultural Foundation to the Shinyang Academic Information Center to carry on scholarship programs. Jeong passed away in 2015 at the age of 85. Currently, the Shinyang Cultural Foundation is managed by SNU.
