Prof. Kun Woo Lee, Dept. of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, SNU

 

Seoul National University’s College of Engineering (Dean: Kookheon Char) announced that Professor Kun Woo Lee at Dept. of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering received the Order of Science and Technology Merit, Changjo Medal (1st Class). Commemorating the Day of Science and ICT, April 21st, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced 120 recipients who have rendered outstanding services in improving science and information technology. Changjo Medal is the highest class of the Order of Science and Technology Merit.

 

Prof. Lee finished his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at SNU in 1978 and received his Ph.D. from MIT, U.S.A. in 1984. Beginning his career as a professor at the University of Illinois in 1984, he has been teaching at SNU’s Dept. of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering since 1986.

 

Prof. Lee served as the Dean of College of Engineering from 2013 to 2017, while presiding as the Dean of Graduate School of Engineering Practice and the President of Korean Engineering Deans Council since 2015. Currently he is the Vice President of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea, President of the Korean Society for Engineering Education, and a Member of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology.

 

On choosing Prof. Lee as the recipient, the Ministry noted that “as a world-renowned expert in the field of computer-aided design (CAD), Prof. Lee served a leading role in reforming engineering education in Korea.”

 

Prof. Lee commented as follows on receiving the Medal: “The growth of Korean industry is a truly miraculous history, supported by advances in technology and engineering. It’s a source of pride for all of us. I think of this Medal as a warm encouragement from our society, commemorating the works of scientists and engineers in the past; I’m receiving it as a representative. From now on I will double the efforts so that Korea can become a leading country in science and technology for following generations.”
