Byeng Dong Youn, CEO of OnePredict, specializes in the field of monitoring, assessing, and predicting the reliability and integrity of facilities.

“We have been acknowledged nationwide as well as worldwide by NASA, GE, and Schaeffler as a small but strong company in the field of predictive solutions in industry information, a core technology in Industry 4.0.”

Byeng Dong Youn (48·Above photo), CEO of OnePredict, recently met up with Seoul Economic Daily in his lab at Seoul National University’s College of Engineering, and commented: “The fundamental technology of Industry 4.0 is the ability to accurately predict industry information related to production, quality, distribution, and safety.”

Youn, currently a professor of Dept. of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at SNU after teaching at Michigan Technological University and University of Maryland, founded OnePredict in 2016 as part of Ministry of Science and ICT’s industry-university-research joint corporation project. He excels in the field of monitoring, assessing, and predicting the reliability and integrity of equipment and facilities, having won multiple global Data Challenges incorporating engineering knowledge and AI. He deals with a wide spectrum of equipment, including large centrifugal compressors in power plant turbines and oil refineries, power transmission and transformation equipment, semiconductor equipment, wind power generators, airplane engines, and batteries.

OnePredict is planning to enter the German market, the birthplace of Industry 4.0, with its industry prognostics solution ‘GuardiOne.’ The opportunity was made available when they successfully solved the problem of predicting bearing failures, a request from Schaeffler, manufacturer of industrial bearings. Schaeffler plans to install OnePredict’s prognostics program in their IoT and Cloud platform. “We are actively targeting global markets with GuardiOne,” commented Youn. “With our technology and price competitiveness, we will start from Germany and expand to Japan next year, establishing our branch in the US the year after that. We have the potential to become a global enterprise.”

OnePredict’s revenue this year is predicted to be around 2.5 billion won. In 2020 when their entry to US and Japanese markets will get in gear, it is expected to increase to 10 billion won. This is due to the rapid growth of the market for predictive solutions, the size of which will increase to 40 trillion won per year by 2020 at current rate. In addition, GuardiOne can be applied to a broad area of fields. “It predicts failures in robots and manufacturing equipment that transports wafers and glass discs for semiconductors and displays. It can also differentiate(?) process quality,” said Youn. “We have been offered by NASA’s Ames Research Center to co-develop predictive solutions for the performance of spacecraft testing equipment, so we’re working on that as well.”

In addition to Schaeffler, OnePredict is currently working together with Mitsubishi Motors, ABB, and Siemens. In Korea, they are increasing cooperation with Samsung, LG, POSCO, SK Energy, and KEPCO. “Recently, one of our clients asked us to predict and diagnose the failure and location of failure in their turbines, and we came out with a remarkably high level of accuracy,” Youn said. “It’s pretty much impossible if you only use AI deep learning algorithms. But incorporating AI and 4 types of dynamics in mechanical engineering, it is possible to come up with a much more accurate prediction and analysis.” He added that “this is more precise than any global turbine manufacturer or operator out there” and that “it is important to combine deep learning and physics knowledge in the prediction and analysis of complex industrial facilities.”

Youn also expressed his ambitions of becoming a role model for university startups, attracting investors in and out of the country in order to enter the global market and develop new technologies. “It’s tough for a professor to start a startup and succeed. Fortunately, we were selected as part of the industry-university-research joint corporation project,” he explained. “We’ve been receiving an annual funding of 300 million won for the last 5 years. It was was of great help.” / Kwang-bon Koh, senior reporter kbgo@sedaily.com
