SNU Aerospace Structure Research team together with Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Professor Seung Jo Kim (Currently Head of Aerospace Research Institute) revealed on the 27th that they successfully managed to hold a stable flight time of 5 min, an all-time best, for the vertical rotation winged cyclo-copter they have been developing.<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

According to the research team, the craft weighing in at 13kg, with a rotational diameter of 54 cm managed to hover for 5 minutes at a height of 4~5 m last October, a world record.

The cyclocopter, first invented by the research team back in 2000 has a cycloid blade system which rotates vertically, different from conventional helicopters.

Professor Kim explained that the cyclocoptors produce less noise and is capable of vertical take-off and landing, along with low-speed forward flight and can also freely change flight directions in tight spaces.

Professor Kim said “the cyclocopter is the world’s first cyloid blade aircraft developed in Korea, and Korea is undoubtedly leading the world in related research. Currently there is a problem of battery life limiting flight-time but there is always a possibility of reducing weight and improving flight time in the future.”
