SNU Engineering Professor Kun Woo Lee (Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering) has been appointed as a Fellow of the ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) in 2013.

Professor Lee graduated from SNU Mechanical Engineering in 1978 where he then went on to receive his doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from the MIT Post-Grad. After working for 2 years as a TA in the University of Illinois Urbana Champagne Campus from 1984, he became a Professor of SNU Engineering’s Mechanical Design faculty from 1986 onwards, working on research development and education at the same time.

After employment at SNU, he became the invitational president of the Advanced Institutes of Convergence Technology, laying the foundation of the nation’s fusion research. Additionally, Professor Lee was the vice president of the Korea CAD/CAM Society, editor of the CAD Journal, Chairperson of the NAEK International Relations Committee, regular member of KSAT, Senior Vice President of KSME and is currently the 57th president of KSME, thereby undoubtedly having a great contribution to the progress of the nation’s mechanical engineering sector.

Fellow of ASME is a position that is only granted to the top 2% of the 12 thousand members within the society, where one must show excellent results in his/her professional field. ASME, the most prestigious mechanical engineering society in the world, established in 1880, has only given out 3000 positions as Fellow of ASME, with roughly 10 fellows currently in the nation, including Professor Lee, Professor Shin Hyung Kang, Professor Woo Il Lee and others.

ASME commended the fact that professor Lee’s field of research was the mainly on the latest IT and fusion of traditional technology which was mainly focused on contributing to the industry in an age where mechanical engineering was largely leaning towards the academic side.  Professor Kun Woo Lee who currently is the dean of SNU Engineering is focusing his efforts on strengthening the identity of the College of Engineering as one that would lead the development of industries nationwide.
