Professor Byeng-Dong Youn’s Research Team wins the PHM Data Challenge for 2 Consecutive Years.

Following last year, Professor Byeng-Dong Youn’s research team was once again awarded as Winner of the 2015 PHM Data Challenge. Just up to 2 years ago, research groups from US and Europe monopolized this award but the 2 consecutive years in which Professor Youn’s research team etched the brilliance of the nation’s fault detection and health management technology to the world. Professor Youn’s research team received a monetary prize and a plaque from the 2015 PHM society last 21^st of October 2015 in San Diego, California, US.

The PHM Data Challenge Competition is held every year by the PHM Society, one of the most prestigious groups in the Prognostics and Health Management Sector, with the theme of the competition being based on various problems within the industries. This year’s challenge was based on the fault detection, diagnosis and classification of the cooling/heating cooperative system, with emphasis on precisely solving the type of fault and the starting/ending time of the fault. Compared to the previous years’ challengers where participants were only required to find the starting point of the fault, this year’s challenge was deemed highly challenging. Professor Youn’s research team redesigned the Incomplete-data-trained FDA method and effectively used the incomplete recordings of the fault data to precisely diagnose the fault of the given system. This new development of the technology is expected to be used to overcome the limits of big data from massive systems, reduce downtime to increase efficiency, and to reduce the risks and costs associated with accidents. It is predicted that Professor Youn’s research will contribute to the implementation of loT technology in smart factories and strengthen the implantation of the technology to the national manufacturing industries.

Professor Youn’s research team was nominated as the winner of the 2014 PHM Data Challenge Competition held by the IEEE trust Society. Following this, the research team has been claimed winner of all the competitions held by the 2 main societies in the past two years. The research team’s approach and results of this year’s competition are to be published in the “International Journal of Prognostics and health Management”.
