Develops a New Robot Engineering Technology for Patients with Hand Paralysis

The dean of SNU College of Engineering (Dean. Kun Woo Lee) revealed that MAE professor Kyu-Jin Cho’s research team as developed a new robot engineering technology for patients with hand paralysis, called the “Exo Glove Poly”.

The Exo Glove Poly wraps around the middle and index finger like a pool glove, and uses external power and can help hand paralysis patients lift over 1kg in weights, open cans, and even turn doorknobs. Also, because the wires that transmit power are made from polymers, the entire device is waterproof.

This technology received a huge amount of recognition after it was first revealed in the Washington DC conference before the 1st Cybathlon, which is held in Zurich, Swiss. The Cybathlon, known as the “ironman Olympics” is a robot engineering Olympics where robots and machines such as bicycles resembling wheelchairs, exoskeleton robots capable of navigating obstacles through brainwaves (EEG) compete against each other.

Professor Cho said “we focused our efforts on making a hand shaped glove device that uses cheap polymer materials to help patients feel more comfortable and reduce any psychological barriers related to using the device. Through the Cybathlon, I hope to see this as a technology that can be used in real life scenarios by disabled people”.
