Professor Kyong-su, Yi of the vehicle dynamics and control laboratory of SNU’s college of engineering (Dean Kun Woo Lee), with his research team, has received the first ever license (within Korean universities) for the temporary run of driverless cars on actual roads, as he revealed on the 16th.

With the exception of the first license received by Hyundai, this is the first ever license among research labs and universities nationwide.

SNU’s driverless car was developed through the combined efforts of the research team and the vehicle dynamics and control laboratory funded by Hyundai. Unlike other driverless vehicles that require expensive sensors, SNU’s driverless car only uses the combination of already commercialized sensors to automatically reach a destination.

Even before the obtaining of the license, the car had already proven its advanced technological feats through multiple tests. Last May, the latest safety features developed by the korea transportation safety authority, along with Hyundai Mobis and a showcase of the driverless cars abilities were shown, along with the car safely driving a 3 km distance without a driver last November on a Young Dong road (영동대로) in seoul during the “Future Power Progress Challenge Parade”. The car also perfectly executed driving within the city roads in SNU’s in-school test roads, which requires more skill than driving on the highway.

Professor Kyong-su, Yi of the vehicle dynamics and control laboratory said that it was an honor to receive the first ever license (within Korean universities) for the temporary run of driverless cars and that through rigorous testing on the 324 km of roads in the 6 regions set by the ministry of land infrastructure and transport, he hopes to bring kores another step closer to the commercialization of driverless cars

This professor obtained his doctorate in mechanical engineering in Berkeley after this masters in SNU mechanical engineering and is currently a professor in the SNU Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering faculty.
