Ph.D. student Sang Min Han of professor Yoon Young Kim’s lab has claimed the Best Student Paper Award in the recent Asian Congress of Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization (ACSMO) held in Nagasaki, Japan on the 22nd to the 26th of May 2016 with the research journal titled “Topology optimization of planar linkage mechanisms with target paths defined by Fourier descriptors”.<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The research showed the limitations of the structural errors in the topology optimization research field used today. The problem of pre-set timings which was yet to be solved in today’s topology optimizations were solved through the use of Fourier descriptors, expanding the problem solving sector of topology optimization research.
