Ph.D. student Yunhan Kim of SNU Laboratory of System Health & Risk Management (Director: Prof. Byeong Dong Youn) received Best Student Paper Award. The research was originally presented at the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers (KSME) Annual Conference in November 2019.

Mr. Kim’s paper is titled “Improved Demodulation Analysis-based Fault Diagnostics of Planetary Gearboxes using Envelope Averaging.” The research performs a new method for processing signals: performing a physical analysis of the amplitude modulation of vibration signals that occur when planetary gearboxes are faulty, then enhancing fault-related signals from the envelopes derived via demodulation. Unlike the previous methods, it uses a weighted average according to the amount of fault-related information in the envelopes. It is noise-resistant and more fault-sensitive.
