‘Flexible Ultralight Robot Arm’ Created by Prof. Kyu-Jin Cho’s Team Listed in 10 Technologies of the Year

Ultralight robot arm for drones, cread by Prof. Kyu-Jin Cho, Dr. Dae-Young Lee, lab alumni Suk-Jun Kim (CMU, SNU), and Prof. Gwang-Pil Jung(Seoul National University of Science and Technology), has been selected as one of the 10 Technologies of the Year in 2018 Mechanics Day commemoration, held on November 14. <?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

 

Mechanics Day commemoration is organized by Korea Association of Machinery Industry, Machinery Financial Cooperative, Korean Foundation of Mechanical Engineering Societies, Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials, Korea Institute of Industrial Technology, and Korea Aerospace Research Institute and financed by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. Since 2002, the event has aimed to seek further advancement in mechanical industries via industry-academia-research collaborations while celebrating the role of engineers. The Korean Foundation of Mechanical Engineering Societies selects ten technologies developed that year and acknowledges them under ’10 Technologies of the Year.’

 

Ultralight robot arm for drones is a technology that offers a creative alternative to large heavyweight robot arms previously used for drones. The arms can be folded flat when they are not used; when unfolded in use, they are able to be fixed with adequate stiffness. Not only does this technology reduce the weight imposed on drones, thereby greatly increasing their adaptability, it also is expected to be applied in various robots and other flexible structures as it is able to achieve variations in both form and stiffness. It was published on the cover of the March issue of Science Robotics this year.
