On March 16, Seoul National University’s College of Engineering (Dean: Kookheon Char) announced that a team led by Sunho Jang of Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering (other members: Wonkyung Do, Soomin Lee, and Jangho Choi of Dept. of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Hyunjin Ku of KAIST’s Dept. of Mechanical Engineering) won First Prize in the Student Design Competition session in HRI (Human-Robot Interaction) Conference 2018, held last week in Chicago, IL, USA.
In the Student Design Competition session, students design and present interactive robots. Teams are according to their robot’s creative interactions with people and its contributions in social activities.
The team showed their robot ‘Shelly’ under a presentation titled “Shelly, a Tortoise-Like Robot for One-to-Many Interaction with Children.”
Shelly was awarded First Prize, highly evaluated for its ability to interact with children and utility in society. Their research also suggested an effective solution in restraining robot abusing behaviors of children, receiving great attention at the conference, and was published in IEEE Spectrum.
The students have worked as a team for their internship at Naver Labs Robotics group last semester (Jul 2017 – Feb 2018). Shelly is the product of their internship research.
