Premixed flame propagation in tubes has been studied mainly from the fundamental standpoint and from the safety problem. Recently an application called the combustion-driven gas pulse soot remover has been developed. It removes soot accumulation on heating surfaces in boilers by sending out pressurized gas pulses from a combustion tube, and breaks down the deposits through the action of shocks and gas flow. It has been developed into an established technology and used in over 50 large utility boilers in China. To better understand the phenomenon and to obtain a better basis for design and control of the device, a study of flame acceleration and overpressure development in a semi-open long tube with repeated obstructions has been made. The effects of fuel type, mixture ratio, geometry of obstructions on flame acceleration and overpressure development were experimentally studied, and various regimes of flame propagation with the corresponding parameters have been found. Numerical models (with simplifications) gave results agreeing rather well with the experimental results. It is concluded that the obstruction-produced turbulence is the main cause of the flame acceleration, and the overpressure development can be predicted with fair accuracy.
