The goal of the present research is to construct accurate time-domain, low order aeroelastic models to be used in production environment for fast and efficient dynamic analyses including flutter, dynamic flight loads, multidisciplinary optimization, and closed-loop control designs.

To this end, an efficient model reduction technique for large-scaled, CFD-based unsteady aerodynamic and aeroelastic systems is presented. The method is based on a modal analysis wherein a small set of optimal eigenmodes are extracted from frequency or time samples of the system response. By maximizing the frequency or time average of inner product between the mode and the response, it produces the best possible basis vectors in the solution space. When invoked with the Galerkin's approximation these modes produce an extremely accurate low order system in state-space form whose low frequency characteristics match very closely with those of the original system.

For illustration, several aeroelastic system configurations including a simple rectangular plate wing, a Boeing 767-200 wind tunnel model, a representative Boeing commercial airplane modeled by Vortex Lattice, TRANAIR, and ELFINI/Singularity, respectively, are studied. The sizes of these models range from an order of 102 to 105 and yet their reduced models remain of an order of 102. It is shown that aerodynamic/aeroelastic responses and aeroelastic root loci have excellent agreements between the reduced-order and the full-order models.
