Qualifying Examination for Thesis Submission
Foreign Language Examination
█ Who takes the examination? Graduate students who have been registered for at least 1 semester.
※ ENGLISH EXAMINATION is Mandatory, but If a student's mother language is *English (either as a common official language or an official language), he or she must take the Korean language examination.
* ENGLISH-SPEAKING COUNTRY : Nigeria, Republic of South Africa, New Zealand, Rwanda, USA, Sudan, United Kingdom, Canada, Kenya, Tanzania, Singapore, Ireland, Hong Kong
※ TEPS or TOEFL may be acknowledged in lieu of the English examination.

* A student who wishes to be exempted from the English examination must submit to the Department office a score above the qualification standard before submitting the thesis evaluation form (Spring semester by late March, Fall semester by late September)
* Term of validity of the foreign language examination : Scores of the foreign language examinations (TEPS, TOEFL) are only valid for 2 years. However, scores earned at the time of, or subsequent to, entrance to SNU are valid until graduation. (The aforementioned scores are defined as those that are recognized at the time of entrance to SNU or that are earned after having taken the foreign language examination for eligibility for thesis/dissertation submission.)
※ Korean language examination for foreign students
- When can I take the examination? In March or September (by the Office of Academic Affairs, SNU)
- Examination Content : A written Korean exam will be held separately depending on the program (Master's/Doctoral) and the field of study (humanities/social sciences/natural sciences/art).
※ When a student receives a grade of "C- or higher" or "S" for a Korean course taken as a substitute for a comprehensive examination during the regular semester or during the sessions that are held during summer/winter vacations (Korean and Korean culture 1 or 2), the Korean examination may be exempted but the grade does not count as part of the completion credit.
※ Students in master's must receive score of 60 or higher, those in doctoral, score of 70 or higher.
Comprehensive Examination (Major Examination) for Master's Degree
1. Who takes the examination? Graduate students who have completed the education for the environment protection & safety, and have completed the education for life respect(suicide prevention)* and had satisfied the Initiative requirements*, and also have been registered for a minimum of 2 semesters (Students admitted in 2014 and thereafter), or at least 3 semesters (Students admitted on and before 2013).
* The completion of the education for life respect(suidide prevention) applies to students who were admitted in 2016 and thereafter.

You must have taken 3 graduate school subjects (marked with A~F) during coursework including 2 graduate subjects offered by advisor’s major group. In special case, you can change subjects after getting approval of program chair professor upon advisor’s request regarding subjects. |
From 2014
|
You must have taken 3 graduate school subjects (marked with A~F) during coursework including 2 subjects (including 1 core subject) from your module group. In case you wish to choose subjects from non-main module group or other department, you need an approval from advisor & program chair professor. |

: Students must receive score of 60 or higher (on average) to pass (perfect score 100)

5. Examination Content (take-home method)
① Choose 3 courses that are relevant to your study field from (under)graduate courses in ME
② Describe how to apply to your research
※ Students must receive score of 60 or higher to pass (perfect score 100)
6. Re-Examination : A candidate who fails the examination may reapply to take the examination ONLY ONCE again.

1. Who takes the examination? Graduate students who have completed the education for the environment protection & safety and have completed the education for life respect(suicide prevention)* and also meet the conditions as below ;
* The completion of the education for life respect(suidide prevention) applies in students who admitted on 2016 and thereafter.
