Bi-Level Integrated System Synthesis (BLISS) is a multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) method that allows design problems to be naturally decomposed into subsystem designs and system optimization. BLISS methodology is well suited to design of complex systems because it allows multiple teams to perform design optimization task independently at the same time and to combine the results at the system level. A new framework software called CenterLink has been developed that delivers full potential of the BLISS methodology. Running as a Web application, CenterLink provides capabilities to define and execute BLISS design processes through Web browsers as a collaboration of project teams. First, data dependency between subsystem models is defined from inputs of participating teams. Second, subsystem groups can store their simulation models into an analysis library, perform a series of subsystem optimizations, and generate surrogate approximation models. Third, the system group takes the surrogate models and performs system optimizations. The BLISS capability is built upon a suite of trade study tools including design of experiments (DOE), surrogate model generation, and optimization. Design structure matrix (DSM) is used to present data dependency and progress of the design process. When combined with coarse grained parallel computing service, the design cycles can be accelerated by distributing independent run cases of DOE studies for subsystem optimizations. The presentation will show how to use the BLISS Web interface to define and solve system optimization of aerospace vehicles in a step by step manner.
