Over the past 30 years, numerical methods and simulation tools for fluid dynamic problems have been advanced as a new discipline, namely, computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Although CFD methods and tools have been developed to the point that no airplane is being designed without some help from CFD, much discussion has been on-going whether CFD is a “mature technology” or not. A personal view on the state-of-the-art in CFD will be discussed from an aerospace engineering perspective, followed by a discussion on current challenges and possibilities. Then a new emerging area of biomedical computing will be discussed from fluid dynamics point of view. A brief introduction to the recent advances in supercomputing facilities will also be presented.
Biographical Sketch:
Dochan Kwak has broad experience in computational fluid dynamics and computational physics. As Chief of the NASA Advanced Supercomputing Applications Branch, he oversees the division''s effort to develop enabling computational technologies and perform path-finding applications in high-end computing.
His technical expertise includes development of viscous, incompressible flow computation methods and tools. He was instrumental in developing a family of incompressible CFD codes, INSD3D. Major applications of INS3D include simulation the flow in Hot Gas Manifold of the SSME Block II engine redesign, simulation of advanced rocket engine turbopump, development of mechanical heart assist devices, development of computational hemodynamics capability for Digital Astronaut project. He has published numerous papers, and lecture notes related to CFD methods and applications including VKI lecture, IBM CFD Short Course, and AGARD Short Course on Incompressible Flow.
He was awarded with two US patents including one (shared with several inventors) for the DeBakey Ventricular Assist Device, a miniature heart pump that prolongs the life of patients awaiting heart transplants. He was a co-winner of the NASA 2001 Commercial Invention of the Year Award for this effort. Kwak has received many other honors, including NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal in 1986 for CFD contribution to SSME HGM redesign work, the first NASA Software of the Year award, for developing INS3D. He was inducted into the Space Technology Hall of Fame in April 1999, and was appointed as Ames Associate Fellow in June 2003. He has been active in technical societies, and is currently serving as a member of the Executive Board for the International Conference on CFD (ICCFD).
He holds a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Seoul National University, and a Ph.D. in aeronautics and astronautics from Stanford University.
