5. Abstract
Hypersonic propulsion and energy conversion using alternative fuels are among the top issues of national security. This presentation will summarize the recent experimental and theoretical research of non-equilibrium plasma assisted combustion and the burning properties of dimethyl ether at Princeton Combustion Laboratory. The seminar will first present a new concept of non equilibrium plasma discharge for combustion enhancement in supersonic combustion and the recent experimental results of combustion enhancement in diffusion and premixed flames with gliding arc and microwave. A principle to achieve non-thermal enhancement of combustion using non-equilibrium plasma will be discussed. Second, the seminar will present recent experimental studies of flame speeds, kinetic mechanisms, and flame lift off properties at normal and elevated pressures of dimethyl-ether and air mixtures. The discrepancy between the experimental data and the predictions will be analyzed. A unique lift-off phenomenon of oxygenated fuels such as dimethyl-ether will be discussed.
