In recent years, as the active magnetic bearing (AMB) technology advances and thus the reliability and safe operation of AMB is enhanced, there has been an increasing demand for application of AMB to transportation system such as aerospace and ground vehicle equipment, and artificial heart pump. However, unlike its applications to the conventional stationary systems, there arise some new issues to be discussed in the design and application of AMBs mounted in the transportation systems, due to the moving nature of the systems. This lecture addresses and discusses some of the important design issues for such AMB applications: compactness, low power loss, robustness to base disturbance, and enhanced reliability. First, to meet the space limitation requirement in transportation system, design concepts of the integrated motor-bearing and axial-radial bearing systems are presented and their performances are discussed. Use of solid shaft and core for small size AMBs may result in increase of power loss due to eddy-current. Some design methods for reducing the power loss are discussed based on a new analysis model for eddy-current loss. AMBs mounted in transportation systems are often subject to harsh base motion. It requires the design of disturbance rejection controllers for ensuring satisfactory control performance, in addition to the stabilization of AMB itself. Finally, it is suggested that, to further enhance the reliability of an AMB system, AMB can also be used as an exciter, in addition to the levitation of shaft, in order to in-situ diagnose any probable malfunctions of the system. The above issues are
intensively discussed based on recent development of various AMBs at KAIST.
