5. 내 용 :

Today satellites provide society with lots of things from scientific and navigation data to global telecommunications services, resulting in a multibillion dollar industry. The field of satellite design plays an important role in shaping the satellite industry.

Since early 1990s, the LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellite development trend has been changed from a single large satellite to a number of small satellites. New technologies are required to be able to meet small satellite missions and architecture. A number of new technologies apply to conventional satellites and enable it to manufacture the small satellites which provide better performance per mass, such as power generation, processing capability, communication data rate, etc.

The enhanced technologies of small satellite in the 21C will be introduced and discussed in details as follows; Formation Flying, Distributed Satellite System, Distributed Aperture System, Multifunctional Structure (MFS), MEMS (Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems), Lightweight Flexible Solar Array (LFSA), etc.

TechSat 21 Program, to explore the technologies required to enable a distributed satellite system and sparse aperture space based radar system, conducted in the USA will be reviewed.

In the conclusion, it is shown that small satellite like microsatellite offer the most cost-effective solutions to established needs with enhanced technologies being developed.
