The California Air Resources Board is responsible for protecting the air quality
resources in California the world’s fifth largest economy. Health effects
research showing the linkage between air pollution and public health will be
described. The role of global climate change in conventional pollution and as
a fleet to the global environment is of necessary importance in California.
California’s leadership role in setting technology-forcing emission standards for
automobiles and light trucks will be illustrated using the following examples:
The California low emission program, including Zero Emission Vehicles
(ZEV’s)
Pavley Bill to control greenhouse gases from light duty vehicles
Other topics will include: regulations to set standards for fuels, truck standards
and off-road vehicle standards.
The California Fuel Cell Partnership will be highlighted, and its role in
accelerating the introduction of fuel cells into the commercial market will be
discussed.
Finally, comments will be made on the technologies and fuels, including diesel,
likely to be important in the next 20-30 years
