Re-configurability in optical networks is becoming one of the most important issues in optical communications especially in access networks. Reliable, fast, and fiber-compatible tuning mechanism is being on great demand in optical devices to meet the ever-increasing requirements for re-configurable optical networks.


In this talk, recent research works on novel tuning mechanisms in fiber optics will be reviewed. Emphasis will be given to acousto-optic control of polarization in a novel hollow core fibers, the world's first observation made in K-JIST.


Discussion on application of conventional MEMS technologies in fiber couplers and development of routing devices will be followed. In fiber waveguide MEMS, various built-in wavelength selective routing capabilities have been exploited, which cannot be achieved in conventional passive mirror type MEMS devices.


Note: the author will give part of the presentation in invited talks in coming OSA, IEEE-LEOS annual meetings and in conference on Optical Fiber Sensor, 2003.
