Some recent needs and progresses in material-mechanics research will be discussed in conjunction with advancement of nano-technology. Recent developments in science have advanced capabilities to fabricate and control unit-process building blocks on the scale of nanometers. The unit-process building blocks include quantum dots, quantum wires, nano-tubes, nano-crystallites, nano-pores, molecular transistors, and molecular engines, etc. A near-future need in nano-technology is the scale-bridging engineering beyond unit-process building blocks to complex functional assemblies. For the scale-bridging engineering some examples of important issues and approaches will be discussed in the area of modeling, design, manufacturing and testing of nano-structural assemblies. The examples include trans-scale information compression in multi-scale modeling, cross-scale interference in roughness evolution, mechanism transitions in friction, multi-scale resolution in materials testing, guided pattern formation in self-organizing processes and self-replication processes.
