5. Abstract:
Traditional Galerking methods use finite elements which are conforming in the sense that the finite element spaces are subspaces of continuous functions. However, since 1972 there have been developments in nonconforming finite elements that are no longer continuous. Such nonconforming elements provide stable finite element methods for Stokes problems and locking-free finite element methods for elasticity problems. More recently, where one wishes to use domain decomposition methods it has been realized that the use of nonconforming finite elements will be more efficient in treating data communication among neighboring elements than that of conforming finite elements. In this talk, some historical remarks in nonconforming finite elements and domain decomposition methods will be given. Also, some new results will be
introduced.
