Heavy metals are important toxic air contaminants. Metals that enter a combustion system are oxidized into forms that may pose a serious health risk if emitted into the atmosphere. Combustion generated ultrafine aerosols may also contribute to global climate change. The metals may be emitted as a vapor or as an ultrafine particle. Experimental and computational studies have been carried out to investigate the behavior of chromium in well-defined combustion systems. The very strong impact of chlorine on the behavior of chromium has been demonstrated. Hexavalent chromium is formed much more easily when chlorine is present in the flame. Iron is a ubiquitous metal in the atmosphere. Work has also been carried out on the health effects of iron and soot emitted from combustion systems by using animal exposures studies. The results that have been obtained indicate that the animals suffer oxidative stress. It is possible that the stress arises from the reaction of iron with hydrogen peroxide in the epithelial cells of the animals' lungs. A novel method will also be described for the treatment of volatile organic compounds, particularly trichloroethylene and toluene. This method makes use of microwave plasma processing. It has been shown that the microwave system is extremely effective in destroying toxic air contaminants without producing hazardous by-products.
