As machinery requires high speed motion, conventional bearings are being replaced with non-contacting air or magnetic bearings. Air bearing is used for low cost applications, but some machines operating in extreme conditions such as the space vehicle or vacuum pump is using magnetic bearings. Magnetic bearing is the typical closed loop control system having sensors and actuators. By modifying the control algorithm, the bearing charateristics can be changed. The seminar will present the basics of magnetic bearings and will introduce several types of sensors and actuators. Currently developing linear type magnetic bearing will be presented briefly.
