In todays business environment, with increasing pressure to reduce product development cycles and increasing globalization, it is becoming critical to integrate globally distributed resources for product design and manufacturing. In order to address this need, Internet technologies have been applied to the field of mechanical design and manufacturing. The characteristics and advantages of Internet-based design and manufacturing can be demonstrated by describing from the ongoing projects at the University of California. A research project named CyberCut provides an Internet-based rapid prototyping service for 3-axis CNC machining. CyberCut's design interface, automated process planning, and universal fixturing system will be discussed as well as the communication architecture of the integrated software tools.
The Design Consultant, a joint project with Ford/Visteon, has been developed to provide Design for Manufacturing (DFM) tools and component databases for CAD/CAE/CAM engineers via the Internet. The main objective of these modules is to reduce product development cost and time-to-market by sharing design and manufacturing information throughout an enterprise. Several Design Consultant tools have been implemented in Visteon's Lighting Department to promote collaborations between designers, optical analysts, manufacturing engineers, and marketing personnel. Using the communication framework studied and the knowledge gained in these projects, similar applications to various manufacturing processes are possible.
