General noise and vibration problem of home appliances will be introduced. Three representative technical projects aimed for the development of low noise products, performed by LG Electronics, will be followed. Firstly, abnormal noise problems of refrigerators will be explained. It will be demonstrated that sources of the abnormal noise can be identified with multiple measurement of vibration responses. It will be also demonstrated that such abnormal noises can be effectively reduced by special treatment of capillary tube and evaporator of the refrigerator. Secondly, noise and vibration issues of small compressors will be introduced. It will be explained that the acoustical source characteristics of suction system can be measured to estimate insertion loss of suction muffler. It will be shown that the measured source impedance near cavity resonance frequency band is close to the characteristic acoustical impedance of the refrigerant gas, showing reflection-free condition at the source. It will also be shown that the insertion loss has narrower bandwidth than the transmission loss, demonstrating experienced difficulties in muffler tuning without insertion loss information. Finally, general issues of sound quality for home appliances will be explained. It will be shown that sound quality metrics, such as loudness, sharpness, roughness and fluctuation strength, are more useful for describing the subjective preference of product sounds than the strength related metrics, such as the overall sound pressure level expressed in the A-weighted decibels.
