Structures for space applications must meet a variety of properties depending upon their function during the mission. Composite structures offer a potential of replacing traditional metallic structures due to their high strength to weight ratio, flexibility in design, custom tailoring of desired properties, and the ability to exist in different environments. The following three projects describe the use of continuous graphite fiber/polymeric matrix composite structures for space applications. The first two project deals with composite isogrids design that was used for the fabrication of launch vehicle fairings and solar array support panels. The third project deals with the development of composite cryogenic tanks. Composite materials are now available which could minimize or substantially reduce the cryogenic tank to launch vehicle structure mass ratio. The use of composite material will not only reduce the weight of the tank by 25%, but the cost of fabricating the tanks can be reduced by 30% compared to current methods of fabrication.
