The SMA is global partnership in graduate education among Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and The National University of Singapore (NUS). The SMA program in IMST provides a unique and innovative educational opportunity for graduate students interested in careers in industry, research centers or universities. With the emphasis on innovation and entrepreneurship, it is particularly appropriate for those interested in new technologies and business ventures in manufacturing. In all three degree programs, the students are exposed to the broad foundations of manufacturing and will learn how manufacturing companies are run. In addition, the M.Eng. and Ph.D. students will participate in cutting-edge work in processes, equipment design and control, systems or integrated productprocess design.
The S.M. in IMST (Professional Masters) is a one-year professional degree program based on coursework that is intended to prepare the student to assume a role of technical leadership in the manufacturing industries. It comprises a highly integrated set of subjects and projects that cover the process, product, system and business aspects of manufacturing. The M.Eng. and Ph.D. degree programs in IMST are research programs that prepare students for careers in industrial research and development centers, research institutes or academic departments interested in fundamental research in manufacturing.
All degree requirements for Ph.D. and M.Eng. include completion of an acceptable thesis prepared in residence at its host institution, viz. either NTU or NUS, with a period spent at MIT unless special permission is granted for part of the thesis work to be accomplished elsewhere.
Scholarships
All candidates admitted to any one of the programs offered by SMA will be awarded scholarships. The scholarship will carry monthly emoluments of S$1,400. Top-up grants will be available for the M.Eng. and Ph.D. programs. The tuition fee for all the SMA Programs is waived. The SMA Office will undertake the arrangements and pay for the travel cost (including the travel insurance) and additional expenses for accommodation and living cost at MIT above that normally incurred in Singapore for students to attend the Immersion Program at MIT. In addition to the scholarships, SMA students may be appointed as teaching assistants or laboratory instructors. Appointments as laboratory instructors or teaching assistants are made only to M.Eng. and Ph.D. students upon recommendation of the thesis supervisor. A student who wishes to be considered for appointment as a laboratory instructor should complete a form to be submitted to the prospective academic department where the laboratory is located.
