In this talk, we are trying to answer some fundamental questions on the computation of compressible gas dynamics.
1. What is the reason for the shock capturing schemes to capture shocks?
2. Where is the numerical dissipation coming from?
3. What is the physical consequence from the numerical dissipation?
As a result, some pathological phenomena of the shock capturing schemes, such as the post-shock oscillations and carbuncle phenomena will be physically explained.
