First Asian scholar to win Grand Prize
- Evaluated as a Nobel Prize-class in the field, "New horizon of technology in the robot era"

Kim Yoon Young, an endowed professor of our department, was selected as the winner of the Grand Prize in 2022 awarded by the Japan Society for Computational Engineering and Science (JSCES), a leading academic society in the field of computational mechanics in Japan.

The award is given to a scholar who has achieved internationally leading and outstanding achievements among scholars around the world in the relevant fields.

Since its enactment in 2007, it has never been awarded to Asian scholars before Professor Kim Yoon Young, and is considered a Nobel Prize in computational science and engineering.

The winner is selected by secretly evaluating the research achievements and contributions of candidates without any notice after searching for candidates from all around the world. This award is known to be the pioneering the creative technology for "technology (algebra) that autonomously designs mechanical devices (algorithm) using computers".

Current design technology makes it difficult to design a new mechanical device in a short period of time, but if professor Kim's technology is commercialized, it can automatically design a high-performance mechanical device. Although noe has succeeded so far, this technology is expected to be an innovative technology that will open the era of high-performance robots and electric vehicles in the future.

Currently, Prof. Kim is promoting the introduction of the technologies in major domestic companies (Hyundai Motor, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Hyundai Mobis, etc.), and foreign institutions (Airbus, Altair, etc.) are also known to be eyeing this technology.

Meanwhile, Professor Kim is a scholar who has been leading the study as a world leader in related fields and will attend the award ceremony in Tsukuba, Japan in May 2023 to give a special lecture.
