Hyejeong Son and Soo-Ho Jo of Prof. Byeng Dong Youn’s Research Team Receives Best Student Presentation Award at the 2020 KSME C
Ph.D. students Hyejeong Son and Soo-Ho Jo of the SNU Laboratory for System Health and Risk Management (Advisor: Prof. Byeng Dong Youn) received Best Student Presentation Award at the 2020 Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers CAE & Applied Mechanics Division Spring Conference. The event was held at the Gyeongdju Hwabaek International Convention Center from August 19th to 21st.
Son’s research is titled “Experimental Design for Optimization-based Model Calibration of Nonlinear System.” It supposes a new sensor network technique for linear and non-linear models, by designing a new standard for selecting sensor location based differential information of sensing data. The current sensor network framework, which is a combination of Fisher information matrix-based selection and differential-based selection, is unable to find a sensor location that is stable against model uncertainty of optimization-based model calibration. While this sensor network technique is contingent upon the identifiability of the calibration value, the new technique proposed in this research mathematically proves that the accuracy of the calibration value can be increased.
Jo’s research is titled “Analytical Modeling for Power Generation of a Piezoelectric Defect-induced Phononic Crystal.” It proposes an analytical model for calculating the amount of power generation of a piezoelectric defect-induced phononic crystal, taking into account the mass, hardness, and electro-mechanical coupling effect of piezoelectric sensors attached to the defects within the phononic crystal. It offers a mathematical induction for the effective transfer matrix of the composite structure with piezoelectric sensors, and examines the accuracy of predicting defect bands and energy harvesting performance by using a finite element method. It presents a clear mathematical model for the input variables and output response of the phononic crystal-based energy harvesting system.
