SNU Begins Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport Self-Driving Mobility Project ‘Majung’

On May 13, Seoul National University Future Mobility Technology Center announced that it has begun the ‘Self-Driving Mobility Service Pilot Project’ by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

SNU Future Mobility Technology Center, headquartered in Siheung Campus, was founded for technological and institutional research on autonomous vehicle-based future cities. As a participant of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport project, it will be carrying out a pilot project of a self-driving mobility service called ‘Majung’ in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province. It has built a consortium with LG Uplus and Automos.

‘Majung’ is a self-driving night shuttle service. A pilot run area for self-driving cars will be set up from Metropolitan Subway Line 4 Oido Station to the residential area of Baegot-dong near the SNU Siheung Campus. A total of 8 self-driving cars will be assigned to 5 different shuttle routes.

In order to improve the safety and benefits of the citizens, the project aims for the following: △Resolving the lack of public transport in the “Last-Mile” area of Baegot New Town △Connecting shuttle stops to the residential area of Baegot-dong △Responding to citizen needs △Ensuring reliability of self-driving technology.

“We hope to test the self-driving technology in an actual urban environment and, simultaneously, develop the service model,” said Prof. Kyong Su Yi, project manager and Director of the Future Mobility Technology Center. “As a leading example, we hope to expand the project across the country and into a global business.”

In addition, the Center is building a research building and a driving test area on SNU Siheung Campus, furthering research in future mobility technologies of the 4th Industrial Revolution.
