On May 3, Dr. Ji-Hyeon Song from the Innovative Design and Integrated Manufacturing Lab (Prof. Sung-Hoon Ahn) became the first person to receive Seoul National University — Georgia Institute of Technology Joint Ph.D. Degree.

Georgia Institute of Technology (commonly known as Georgia Tech), located in Atlanta, Georgia, is one of the best engineering universities in the US. Georgia Tech offers technology-based education to over 25 thousand undergraduate and graduate students in areas such as engineering, computing, science, business, and design. Especially, their Mechanical Engineering program is hailed as top-tier in the country.

Dr. Song studied under Prof. Sung-Hoon Ahn of SNU Dept. of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Prof. Yan Wang of Georgia Tech. Her PhD thesis was titled “A Nanoparticle Laser Patterning Process to Fabricate Flexible Electronics.”

Dept. of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is the only engineering department in SNU to offer a joint PhD program with Georgia Tech’s School of Mechanical Engineering. The student is qualified to receive the joint degree after visiting Georgia Tech for 1 year and working on a joint research program during the duration of their degree studies at SNU. They must also meet the graduation requirements of both departments.
