Seoul National University’s College of Engineering (Dean: Kookheon Char) announced that it will be starting an international joint research in the field of smart factories with RWTH Aachen University, a leading institution in manufacturing industry of Germany.

Part of the 2018 International Joint Research Foundational Research Lab Project of the National Research Foundation of Korea, Korea-Germany Intelligent Manufacturing System Laboratory will be consisting of the following members: SNU Professors Chong Nam Chu, Sung-Hoon Ahn, and Byeng Dong Youn of Dept. of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering; Professor Insoon Yang of Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering; and RWTH Aachen University Professor Christian Brecher of Productional Engineering, who is also the Director of Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology.

Each laboratory working in their own specialized area, the joint research team will be cooperating in researching areas such as manufacturing process optimization, robots, 3D printing, sensor development and application, fault diagnosis and prognosis, energy monitoring, communications, AI, and big data. SNU researchers will be sent to Aachen University in order to study their industry-academia collaboration, hardware, and manufacturing simulation technology. Through the process, the two universities will be sharing a digital twin, compiling their manufacturing know-hows together.

Prof. Kookheon Char, Dean of SNU College of Engineering, commented that “smart factory technology is a critical area in need of development for the future of Korean manufacturing industry” and pointed out that “SNU needs to play a leading role not just in Korea but internationally as well, seeing that [the technology] is included in the 17 future research agenda of 2018, selected by SNU.”

Prof. Sung-Hoon Ahn, leader of the joint research, said that “smart factory technology is ultimately used by companies, so this project will be starting from foundational research.

“However, we aim for the development of an ‘optimal smart factory’ technology, which can be used by small-scale businesses for their manufacturing lines at a low cost,” he clarified, stressing the difference from existing research.
