Team Enviro Lotus wins Excellence Award at X-Corps Festival

On January 11, 2018, Team Enviro Lotus from Seoul National University won the Excellence Award (Korean Professional Engineers Award) at ‘X-Corps Festival,’ held in Gyeonggido Business & Science Accelerator.

Organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT, the event was held for the advancement of practical-oriented engineering education. 416 teams of science and engineering undergraduates and graduate students from 14 universities entered the event, carrying out research tasks and employing their practical problem-solving skills.

40 teams that won the first round at their respective universities participated in the competition. Seoul National University’s Team Enviro Lotus and Team Blue Observer competed as representatives. Ultimately, Team Enviro Lotus (Seong-geun Yoo from Graduate Department of Mechanical Engineering, Joon-hwan Jeong and Il-kwon Hong from Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering) won the Excellence Award, recognized for the creativity, relevance, and excellence of their research.

SNU’s Team Enviro Lotus designed a machine for the removal of marine debris using vortex, and created a prototype of the robot that can collect floating garbage in rivers or lakes, utilizing the flow of surface fluid.

Byeong-sam Kang, Director of Future HR Policy Division of the Ministry of Science and ICT, commented that “this competition was a place for young engineers to compete with their creative ideas and challenging themselves to solve various practical problems,” and that “we can prepare for the age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution by strengthening creativity and problem-solving capability throughout the entire research process of problem definition, design, and execution.”

As for research projects of the competition with high potentials of on-site applicability, they will offer additional consultations in commercialization and applying for patents. They will also seek for a possible cooperation with the Ministry’s start-up support project.
